Apple Picking in San Diego

Fall in San Diego finds many families apple picking in nearby Julian. Known for delicious apple pies, Julian is home to many apple farms, allowing visitors to purchase or pick their own apples. Apple picking season typically begins in September (sometimes as early as the end of August) and continues through October or until the orchard runs out of apples for the year. Below are some apple orchards in Julian (about 40 miles northeast of San Diego). Contact each orchard directly for information about this year’s apple crop.

Julian Apple Days Festival
1150 Julian Orchards Dr.

As part of Julian’s Apple Days Celebration, a two-day Apple Days Festival will be held September 23 & 24, 2017 at Menghini Winery. Featuring music and dancing, an antique tractor display, children’s games and activities, gold panning, a beer and wine garden, food and merchandise vendors, contests, and, of course, apple pie. The event runs from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 for adults. Free for active military and children 12 and under.

Volcan Valley Apple Farm

Pick your own apples starting August 25, 2017 Fri.–Mon., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Seven varieties of apples ripen sequentially through mid September. Ripe rows are marked with green flags. Children 5 and under free. Apple bags hold 6-7 lbs of delicious apples and are $12/bag, admission included. Check back for updates on their Facebook page.

Apples and Art orchard opens September 9, 2017, but is exclusively for groups of 20 people or more. Reservations are limited, so plan to pick early! 

Apple Starr Orchard

Apple Starr is a certified organic apple and pear orchard that expects to open on weekends from 10 a.m–5 p.m. starting in August. Groups of 15 or more are welcome on Monday mornings before noon and on Friday afternoons after 1 pm. Call for details.

Peacefield Orchard
3803 Wynola Rd., Julian
Peaceful Orchard apple picking begins August 12, 2017. All fruit is 100% naturally grown with no pesticides, chemicals, bug hormones or petroleum products. Apple varieties include Granny Smith, Gravenstein, Jonagold and more! Closed Monday-Friday but with a group of 10+ guests or if you meet a $50 minimum, they can arrange their grower to give you a tour of the facility.
